That looks like pine but well dried. I've had troubles chiseling across the grain with that. Looks like you did it better than I have.

Duck, it’s probably 50+ years old.

Chisels on the first side through go well. Flipping it over and finishing the chops is another thing altogether. Sharp helps.

Love the work Smitty!

I've tried the hand cut DTs a few times and chip out always bums me out. The good thing is I can appreciate the discipline required with a good and sharp chisel. 
Gotta give you a 👍 for your backer/bench protector, DTs rule!
