Overlay Panels for a Car Project #10: Adjusting the Design

This is part 10 in a 10 part series: Overlay Panels for a Car Project

  1. Measuring the shape
...
  1. Installing Strips
  2. Adjusting the Design

There has been an aspect of the panel layout that has been bugging me. Now seems as good of a time as any to see if there is anything I can do about it. The problem area is where the panel extends slightly onto the hood.

There is a small part of the trim (represented by the tape) that is on the hood. It just seems a bit off – like an oversight. I need to either make it smaller and not extend onto the hood or make it larger so it looks like it is supposed to be there. I’m going with the second option.

I have my template for this part of the car.

I need to extend the template further onto the hood. If you look closely you can see the pencil lines for the new trim shape.

Now I’ll make a template showing the shape of the trim and one for the old trim shape.

I like the new one better.

Now I need to extend my forms to support the longer hood trim. The trim is quite a bit longer.

I can get by with a 2x4 for support.

I added 3 “mini-forms” to guide the curve and twist of the trim. Unlike all the careful measurements of the initial form design, this is more of an educated guess.

Now with the trim blank extended I can get back to trimming around the fenders.

Total hours are now about 100.
This is quite the undertaking, Steve!!

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Fussing over the details, shows you are still committed to perfection!
Yeah, when it's this big of a project it's hard to let the little details slip by.
Looks like a good adjustment from here.

May you have the day you deserve!

I agree with your decision on the hood section, looks great.
Thanks! I'll know for sure once I get it on the hood. My only thought now is that maybe it should be even longer. If so, there are ways...

Like taking it all the way around the hood?
Waiting to see what you end up with.
Can't wait for the video of you driving the finished product around.

You found a board-stretcher, Steve? Nice work!

May you have the day you deserve!

duckmilk - the hood thins down too much to take the trim all the way around. It's more about the size of the radius at the tip.

Dave - not so much a board-stretcher as a board-adder-oner 🙂
