This is part 1 in a 1 part series: Just for Fun

  1. Box-work Continues

The Oak-sided Box that was begun in the "Starting Over" blog
had Its top cut off and its corners pinned...

Cleanup of the over-long box joints and sanding was accomplished after that
and then the hinges for this effort were started this afternoon...
To that end, a piece of Cherry and two different sized drills were obtained...

these first holes were drilled and will ultimately be for the hinge pins...
These holes go right through and need to be perfectly parallel to the "Base" of the Hinge!

Two sizes are used, one is friction fit to the hinge pin (3/16"),
the other is slip fit for what will be the top, moving half of the hinges (7/32")...
Lately, I've been doing what I think of as "Barrel Style" hinges like these...

For this latest box, a return to where I started from,
with a more traditional "Hinge" look was decided upon...

Of course, the shape of hinges is limited only by the imagination,
but I chose a "simple" shape this time...
But even a simple shape requires a good deal of plotting and planning...

Because this is to be cut out on the Scroll Saw,
numerous Holes need to be drilled for Maneuverability....

The hinges are glued to the box in the end,
but wooden dowels are also added to secure the hinges to the box...
Undersized pilot holes are added now for those dowels to complete the drilling phase...

And then it's off to the Scroll Saw where the worst of the cutting,
sideways, through the thickness of the piece is done first...

These cuts are NOT completely finished!
When I get nearly to the end I back out,
because I don't want these pieces to fall out
before the top cuts are made...
The same is done for those top cuts,
stopping short of finishing cuts,
until all the cuts are made, and the pieces are separated carefully from the waste...

And a few minutes later
there were two, freshly cut Hinges...

The excess pin was trimmed, edges filed and sanded,
and they're already glued to the box...

Tomorrow I'll re-size the dowel holes right on the box,
and glue and tap them in...
I started these at just after 1:30 PM
and glued them on just before 5:30PM...
My time is actually improving,
they used to take me around six hours! :)
