If you know you are just going to build it once, measure twice and go for it. If you think you may build it again, make a template! It will save you time and get perfect results.

I make templates all the time. I use tempered hard board 1/4" thick.

I usually use lesser quality materials for templates, however using tempered hard board would be better.

We’re rebuilding a railway carriage and use templates/jigs all the time. So much repeat work its stupid not to.
Even if you only think you are going to make one of a project, I always try to make a template if I think it may help.
