Project Information
well my number one bucket list project is finally done after several months of stop and start,i only worked on it when i was totally in the mood.this chair is made from charles brocks plans videos and full size templates.i stayed true to maloofs style for the most part but sculpted to my own desires.its made from walnut with maple plugs and inlays in the rockers.the finish is maloof oil that i mix myself.3 coats of the poly oil and one finish coat of his oil wax.i didnt keep track of the time spent but id say it was an easy 200 hours+.i was hesitant to do this project, considering i had the plans for a couple years, but with the encouragement from other jocks that had done one i went at it.it totally pushed me to get out of my comfort zone and gain many new skils that i will utilize for years to come.
shaping the seat.

turning and shaping the front leg.

front leg attached with two screws. yes maloof did use screws sometimes !

Pottz - how did you scoop out your seats on this and the stool? Beautiful work.
here are some of the tools i used to do the shaping. i also used a kutzall grinding wheel on a 4-1/2" small grinder to do the bulk of it.

Pottz that’s truly beautiful. It just screams old world craftsman to me. An heirloom piece in every sense of the world. I spent no less than 20 minutes examining the images. Bravo, my friend, bravo.  ????

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Thanks for explaining how you scooped out the seats. I do it the same way, with a Kutzall shaping disc. Anybody that complains about how much of a mess a lathe makes hasn't used one of these.
An impressive piece every time I see it pottz!

oh man thank so much. my neighbor loved it too.he says how much you want for it.i say well it's not really for sale, but id take 5k today. he about faints. he's in his 80's when i made it and ive done lots of stuff for him over the years. so i said, for you ill do 3k. and he still balks as way too much. i say matt ive got 600 just in walnut alone plus supplies and about a 100 hours of my time man. he passes and im happy because i didn't want to sell it anyway. people just dont understand what something like this costs in money and time. maybe he should ask what a maloof rocker costs. try 25k,and thats when he was alive !!!!!

Probably spent 300 on just router bits and rasps.

Figuring out how to do something you have never done is what makes a good challenge.

There's nothing like using a premium rasp.  I have a couple of Liogiers that are a dream to use, even compared to other hand-stitched rasps.

i didn't say up front all that happened with this sad story. he had two brothers which i knew both.his one that lived about 100 miles from me,we kept in constant touch sharing what we knew what was going on with him. then i get a call from his wife in tears telling me his his brother had a heart attack and died ! he was out hunting with a friend and decided to take a break,he sat down on a log and fell on the ground dead ! i was beside myself ! then a little while later his wifes sister suddenly died ! wow,im thinking im over whelmed ! i cant even imagine what she went through in a years time. cherish life and live everyday guys.you dont know when it will be your last !

this a pic i took about 35 years ago of him and me fishing the sierras. i sometimes give the pic a tap as i leave the storeroom of my shop !
