Sunburst Box

I got the idea for the lid of this box from the book "Box-Making Basics" by David Freedman. I made the lid from maple and the carcase from black walnut.
 
Here are some photos of the lid construction.
 
These are the 10 rays. I cut them to rough shape on the bandsaw. Then I used a plywood template and trimmed them on the router table.




I first glued them in pairs. Strips of adhesive-backed sandpaper on the wooden clamps prevented the pieces from slipping out.




Then I glued the five pairs together just using tape to hold them in place.

Really neat design!  Maple and walnut are a winning combination.
