Child's Workbench

This workbench is from the book Woodshop For Kids by Jack McKee.  It was built using mostly materials that I had on hand.  It took about six hours to build, with the assistance of my six and eight year-old sons.

The bench really is amazingly solid.  The size is just right for my boys.  The top is about 21" x 48".  The height of the top is 27".

Now I need to look into getting an appropriate vise for the bench.  If anyone has any suggestions, please pass them on.

Update
This project was posted elsewhere Jun 13, 2010.  Over 12 years later, it is being used as I never thought it would.  My youngest son, now 18, does blacksmithing and other metalworking.  This bench holds two vises with a combined weight of 100 lbs.  The following photos show the "rich patina" that has built up over the years.  You can also see how it was reinforced with a 2X4 post under the huge Charles Parker vice and some L-brackets attaching it to the wall of the barn.

The low height of this bench is an advantage because the large vise is so high that it would be hard to use on a standard-height workbench.

That’s a great story, it’s fantastic that it’s still in use after all those years.
Cool!
Made to be a workhorse and it is.
….and will be for many more years im sure.

Awesome that it has held up well and still has a purpose. Good job passing on a crafting passion to your son.
