I've been making and giving these away for a few years. The first dozen or so hit the burn can as there was a severe learning curve. Looking at some of them you will see that I've used plywood turned on edge for extra effect, I think it makes for a more complex weave with lots of lines in it, got to find plywood without voids and that's not easy to find. On these I used 3/4 ply with 1/8 inch strips laminated to each side to bring the with to 1 inch, then I ran them edgewise through my drum sander to make sure they were a uniform 1 inch.
A couple of tips are:
+Making long stringers of laminated wood, I try for 1 inch (2.54cm) wide and make sure it is uniform 1 inch the whole length, if the width varies even a little you'll have agonies during the glue up. It does not have to be 1 inch but must be uniform.
+The length of the short pieces must equal the width of the stringers, that is they must be square (in my case 1 in X 1 in) exactly or as close as you can make them
+ The length of the long pieces must be exactly 3 times the width (3 inches), any deviation will frustrate the assembly
+ The glue up can be a real mess as I never found a way to clamp them, I work quickly on a flat surface and use a lot of glue on both sides of the pieces. squish them together as tightly as possible, a little extra glue helps to fill in any voids.
+These are finished with a mix of beeswax and mineral oil
