Little Weed Spoon

Another little whittling project finished off in my hotel room with a knife and a couple of palm gouges.

Last week when I was away from home our sewer drain backed up. Luckily my wife noticed something was wrong and contacted the water company. When they lifted the drain and sent the camera in, they found that a root from a neighbour's tree had found a way in through one of the joins in the pipe. With all the nutrients it could want, it just grew and grew until it was preventing the sewage from flowing away. Luckily for me, the point at which the root entered the drain was out on the road so it didn't cost me a penny. They sent in their high pressure water jet mole thingy which chewed up the root and solved the problem.

So with roots on my mind, I decided to decorate this Lindenwood spoon with a simple relief carving of a weed with the roots reaching into the bowl of the spoon. It was a challenge to cut through the end grain of the wood between the roots using only the tools that I had with me, so much so that I've now ordered some miniature carving chisels to use on future projects.

Thanks for looking.

Now that is a really interesting spoon.   Well done.

The detail carving on this spoon is fantastic, great work.
As for the roots, they'll come back, but with an occasional application of commercial root killer to the line, you can outsmart the tree.
@Oldtool - As luck would have it, my neighbour actually had the tree removed a couple of years after this, so there's no chance of them coming back now.

Love that spoon!
Very impressive that you did that in a hotel room with just a few tools.
