A vintage Wheel drive for the leg vise

Ever since I've seen the wheel drive like the bench craft I thought it would be pretty cool to have, as an upgrade to my leg vice. But I'm more of a vintage guy, so something that new and shinny wouldn't fit the decor of my shop. Plus, at over $300, I find it hard to justify.

So as I saw wheels in flea markets and antique shops I'd stop and look. Most were way more than I thought they were worth, and I even bought an old tractor steering wheel, but it just didn't seem to fit. Then one day I ran onto this in an antique shop. The price was right, so home it came.

Heavy, vintage and cool. So lets see if it will work. I had to purchase a set of larger drill bits. I needed to enlarged the hole slightly to 15/16". A set of bits were only about $30, so I ordered them.

So I popped the pin and removed the existing handle

Made a new cherry knob.

And what do you know. A working vintage wheeled leg vice.

Nice one, gotta love the vintage appearance.
Love it, really nice.

Really suits the bench. Nicely done.

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

That was a great find, and I bet it clamps anything with little force.

looks like something i would crack my knee on every time i passed it LOL 😍😎👍

Looks good, but I’m with Tony. Maybe paint it CAT yellow so you can really see it after whanging your knee on it going past? ;-)

May you have the day you deserve!

The only issue I've had with it was this: One day I was in a bit of a hurry trying to finish a project. I cut a piece of 5/4 oak and had a cut off about 12-16" long that i didn't need so I just set it in front of the bench. I needed to put the remainder in the bench vise and I had a habit of grabbing the handle and giving it about a 1/4 turn and letting gravity carry it where it needs to go. Well, not today because today I was in a rush, so I grabbed the handle with the intend of doing about two full, fast turns. BUT......i had set that piece of oak against the wheel, so with about a 1/4 full force "got to get it done in a hurry" turn, my fingers became between the handle, the momentum of a somewhat heavy fly wheel and that piece of immovable 5/4 oak. I then did about 3 or 5 laps around the shop spewing profanity and not knowing if i should cry, pass out or pee my pants. To be honest, i think i did all three. I have never set anything in front of that wheel since.

Damn Don, you could lose a finger that way!

Wow, I feel the pain here.

That’s  really a great crank. Sorry you were hurt. At least you didn’t do serious damage to you hand. Do you think a step bit would have worked to enlarging the hole?
