Table lamps for AZ House

Project Information

I built these lamps in April 2022.  They were posted on LJ.
These lamps are for our master bedroom in Arizona. They are 17 inches tall and the body is 4.5" square. The face design pattern came from Don Jovag's book "Segmented Bowls for the Beginning Turner".

Woods used are walnut, hard maple, bloodwood & morado. I chose bloodwood over padauk since it changes color slower.

The design element is built of wood strips about 2" wide x 5/16" thick, ends are cut to 30 degrees in a jig. Ends are friction glued, drum sanded to about 1/4" thickness and laminated into a block about 2"x18"x2" then ripped into 2 pieces. The bloodwood section is 10" tall.

I made a scale drawing of that element which was helpful making the cut list.

I was going to rip mine into 3 strips about 1/2" wide but the bandsaw cut wasn't straight enough so settled for two strips.

I made two laminated blocks, the second one I will take back to Washington state and make two lamps for that house. Hopefully I can make 3 design pieces out of that block.

Am very happy with how they turned out and have ideas for how to make it go smoother next time.

I see they match the box! Nice!

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Nice lamps, the pattern is really nice. Well done Dave.
