I wanted to make a puzzle that needed no solution, and at the same time I was looking to make a teaching aid for the Grade 3/4 class here in my community.
The puzzle itself is complex enough with 5 dials that need to be unlocked in order for the door to open.
If you really need to give up and look at the back, easy enough.
As a kit, there is precious moments just waiting to happen as family time spent with the ole jigsaw puzzle is updated with a fun and exciting puzzle that features all kinds of mechanical systems. I know right, who can sleep knowing this?
I think the most rewarding part came when I watched on as a young student picked up the puzzle and by intentionally exploring both sides was she able to come to understand how these systems work together. The amount of satisfaction she felt for her solving the puzzle was priceless. After that we were able to ask her questions as to which systems used gravity, magnets, rotation, etc.
Also built into this puzzle is a quick lesson about coded information. The numbers around the outside elude to a clue as to the position of one of the 5 dials.
This one is a prototype, hoping to get to production of a handful of these this year, fingers crossed.
Thanks for looking guys!
