I made these for a coworkers hunting shack. They are made from dunnage that material came on at the job site. Nice easy design. I hit them with the torch to give them that look. 
Rustic looking, and should fit in the style of the cabin.

The torching really brings out the rough surfaces, screams "cabin"! 👍
I need to make some heavy duty brackets for a shelf in my shop. How did you join the cross piece to the bracket? Mortice and tenon or screws?

These were made as a decorative bracket. They were just glued and nailed. 
I would think if you used screws these would work really well.
