45 Degree Miter Sled

This project was posted on LJ May 2021.  A Box  Swap 23 participant said in one of his comments that he was thinking he needed a picture frame sled.  I use this sled when I want very tight miters on frames.  3 of my tables have perimeter frames and insert panels in the middle.
Putting the extension stop device pictures for frames longer than about 26 inches on also.  Made the TV table tops much easier and more accurate.

Project Information
For my End Table Table Top that is shown on my Blog I wanted to make a mitre sled to cut the mitre corners as accurately as possible. I built a 45 degree sled following the YouTube video by William Ng.

My sled however did not come out dead on perfect on the first correction adjustment like William's.

After thinking about why mine was not able to be adjusted to meet my expectations I re-cut the chevron that had sat an Arizona summer in a house cooled to 88 degrees and sat upright on the upper shelf of my closet.

First correction adjustment triangle came out very close and I used that to cut the outer frame of the table top.

Needing a shop fix today I went through the sled adjustment with 2 adjustment cuts. I used the drill press to pre-drill holes for the screws that fix the chevron to the sled. Came out 0.0025" in a 16 inch length. Good enough for me.

William makes it look so easy.

Sled base dimensions : 29" wide x 23" deep x 3/4" thick, used birch plywood from HD
Used 2 layers of 0.75" BB for front and rear fences.

Used cutting board material for runners (not actual Cutting board but same material)

Great addition for a table saw Dave. Like the adjustable stop too.

Excellent!

Having the L/R fences means you will always have a 90 deg corner and sure beats setting up a standard miter gauge several times to do the same work.
I know who to contact when I start mine. This one is what I had in mind. Great sled!

For the Calibration cut material I recommend the 7/16" thick MDF/MDO material.  It allows for the calipers to easily grip the triangle cut offs and the extra thickness I believe adds additional strength to the points of the cut off triangles so they don't flatten and throw off the readings.

On the adjustable stop make the angle between the arm and the angled stop piece more than 45degrees, 46 or 47 is enough.
