Japanese Incense Chest - Kodansu

For those of you who have followed my post in the past you will be aware that I’m in my Japanese period……… This piece was the last of my suite of items for Kodo - the Japanese incense ceremony. If you’ve not seen my other items, then you can view the main Incense chest here, the writing box here, and the writing table here.

I'm now making a set of traditional Japanese shelves used to display all theses.

So, small chest incense chest or Kodansu.   As with all the other pieces in the Kodo suite, this small chest, 200 x 200 x 150 or 8” x 6*" x ” is covered with a Teak diamond parquetry pattern, enhanced with Mother of Pearl stringing and gold MOP dots. The edgings and base are walnut. The chest is veneered marine ply.

The drawers are made from lime/bass wood, with walnut veneered ply bottoms, and the same Teak diamond parquetry and MOP shell dots on their fronts.

The MOP string is cut from laminated sheets that I get from ‘Australian MOP’. They also sell a vast range of dots from different shells, as well as from reconstituted stone. The hardware is from the ‘good and cheap as chips’, AliExpress.

As with all my projects this is finished with 8 or 9 coats of polyurethane varnish, sanded down with mirco mesh through to 4000 grit, and then wax polished.

It is used to hold the origami packets of different incense folders ready for traditional Incense comparing comparing games – Kumiko

I made the origami packets after researching them on the internet – a fascinating subject in its own right!!

I thought this would complete the suite …........... But I've now decide to make a tray to hold some of the contents of the main chest and then a set of traditional shelves used to display all these items.   Watch this space for the next two pieces!

As ever thankyou for looking.

Please ask if you have any questions.
