Dremel Storage Box

Those plastic cases you get with power tools- like a Dremel rotary tool- have barely enough room to get the tool back in there once you take 'em out let alone space  for accessories or bits. For that reason I made this box ( and 2 others in Arizona).
This one is made from female Box elder wood and has deep  walnut splines so that they protrude through inside the box to act as supports for the tray. It had all six pieces lock mitered together and then curve cut on the band saw. The three sections of the tray lift out to be taken to  job so all the bit are handy.

It makes it real enjoyable to used this tool............................Cheers, Jim

Nicely done Jim! Beautiful wood.

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Beautiful box JJ... gotta admit that the boxes usually supplied are either crappy or cardboard.

I never got fancy with custom made handles... call it lazy or lack of imagination... SWMBO calls it talent (errr, lack thereof). However, I do have an aversion to handles on top... they stop stacking, and bigger ones may inhibit drawer closure,

... some may appreciate why I'm now over making boxes for tools.

I've gone "streamline" stackable,

though they may be side and length "clumsy".

I only buy Fe$tool for the stackable 'tainers!
For pottzy's eyes only,

'tainers are great for wrapping Bos¢h in "cotton wool paper",  protecting them from getting screwed!

If your first cut is too short... Take the second cut from the longer end... LBD

I store a lot in drawers, but putting it in boxes is also a very good idea. Nicely done.

I also agree on changing plastic boxes with wooden---beautiful box!

Beautiful box for some great storage Jim, that handle looks really good too. Well done.

Double duty splines, nice thinking.

Nice! If I used my dremel more often, I would likely build it a better home, which would probably cause me to use it more…

May you have the day you deserve!

nice box jim, i agree about the ones they come in. ive got mine in a repurposed metal box with a tray on top for bits. plenty of room and it encourages me to use it more often.

Beautiful and a great improvement over the plactic one.  I need something like that just for better storage of all the bits and accessories.  I have my new rotary tool on a hanger and am trying to figure storage for all the others necessities for it.
May have to do the same for my current Dremel.    Yours gives me lots of ideas.
Do have an old Dremel #3 I think in a metal box.    It was Dad's, kind of small for bits and accessories.   Bits stuck in a piece of foam.     But it was Dad's.      Keep it the same but mine needs a wooden box as well as all the bits and discs etc.   Thanks for posting.

The comments about using the tool more if the factory boxes were better is dead on IMO.
Only problem I see Jim is your box is already maxed out 🤔, otherwise it another one of your well designed creations 🙂

I have three or four drexel's and a passel of 1/8" bits and accessories. Can't find them when I need them and I dread trying to put just the one back into the factory box. On the shop projects to-do list!

splint you just said yourself you cant find em when you need em and dread the factory box. but if you had an organized box, youd use em more ?

True dat!

Just want a box that I can open up, find the bit and wrench, remove the tool and go to work. The current box required the cord to be coiled up just right so it can be put back in. Don't know how many times I've been at the vise making some metal thingy and needed to adjust a whole or slot. Turn my head to the right and see the Dremel box on the shelf, sigh, then go to the tool box and grab a small file.

Probably just need to set up a Dremel workstation, everything out and ready 🙄

Should spend some time finding all the stuff and figure out how many ft^3 are needed.
i went cordless on the last dremel, so much nicer to work with.

I also have a cordless, much nicer for those quick jobs. Came in a cardboard box 🙂

Wrench-less bit changes are a big +
oh yeah, no cord, no wrench, only way to fly.

Thanks you all for the nice comments and discussions!.

I think I have all the bits and and sanding drums I'll ever need in this box. I did plan for the cord with a cut down divider and specific compartment to hold it .  This box makes it  so enjoyable to do a job  with everything right in front of me- no sorting through containers looking for the right bit and packing up afterwards is real quick.

Hi Alex. I do like handles on top of all the boxes I make because they take one hand to retrieve and carry them- some are pretty heavy with steel tools inside.. I don't stack any of them. Some are in cabinets or on shelves and others are out where I can see and grab them for a job.

Cordless is cool but you also need a charger and spare batteries. My experience with cordless tools - especially when  using them for a tough jobs is they crap out in the middle of it. I guess a Dremel won't be used so much like that.

The cordless Dremel is nice in that if you are carving a shoe where you use it like a pen, there is no cord to push and pull against. Downside is it is a bit "meatier" and makes you feel like a little kid again, being forced to eat your cereal with a big spoon.
