I was going to wait to post this project until all of the organization in the drawers was done but who knows when that will be so here it is. Another maple and birch shop cabinet to put my bench top drill press on. Drawer faces are cut from one piece of continuous grain plywood and edge banded. The cabinet is finished in 5 coats of Waterlox and then waxed.
I know drawers are often consider as "junk collectors" but I prefer them. I like to build my own organizers for all the accessories that go with a tool. Right now...surprise surprise...most of the drawers on this cabinet are filled with hand planes. So drawers can be a junk collector if you don't build the organizers.
The top drawer which gets used the most was purposely made shorter. The idea was I wouldn't have to step back away from the tool to get at my most commonly used bits. The top lip was added for looks but also to keep bits from being able to roll off onto the floor. It makes cleaning up a bit of pain but it has saved a couple forstner bits already so I think it was a good design feature.
The only thing I don't like is the mobile base I used. It is one of the Rockler DIY kits and I'm not a huge fan of them. I think I like the Bora base that I used on my ShopSmith cabinet much better. The price is the same but the Bora takes up less space if you just use the 4 corner plates.
And for those that like old tools made shiny here is a close up of the drill press.
I have intended to build a new one, as the current one is a repurposed undercounter cabinet I made about 40 years ago. Its rather flimsy and definitely ugly; the drawer slides nobody would believe. What I dread is moving the drill press ; its one of the old Delta industrial models and takes 2 people to lift.
Well done Sansoo! I'd be embarrassed to sit mine next to it! I'm with you on drawers. In a work shop they beat shelves every time IMO because the keep the dust on the tools to a minimum.
Very nice. I have something like this on my bucket list. I'm with you on drawers, for storing drill bits much more sensible than shelves. That press is super nice.
