Poker table top for game room

My son requested a hexagon poker table top for his game room, to fit on an existing 48" diameter round pedestal table. Of course the answer was "I can do that", and we were off & running.

After confirming the existing table top at 48" maximum, I made a 48" round base for the poker table top as a platform base to mount all other components on & would make easy for transport since my son resides in Ohio & I'm in Pennsylvania. Also for transport, this was made in three sections - two table halves & one center mount playing surface.

After gluing up & planning flat the round top, I made 6 hexagon segments long enough so that when assembled there is a half inch overhang or clearance all around, just to play it safe. Then the assembly of the hexagon sides to the round table, creating a short apron around the hex's perimeter. To the apron and prior mentioned hex segments I then mounted the top finish boards, each with cutouts to accommodate a drink holder and a chip tray for each place setting. The chip trays I made with a router and a round nose bit, followed with hand sanding. These chip trays are glued in, not removeable. The fancy EGG segment ornamental molding is Crown from the big box store. (I can't do that)

The dye used is TransTint Medium Brown, followed by about 5 coats of Varathane Ultimate Polyurethane, with very light sanding between coats.

The table top center is covered with grey felt selected so as to match his pool table. (Photo of pool table shown but covered) This assembly does raise the table "a little" according, but he also said it was "no big deal, it's fine.'

Thanks for viewing.

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

10 thumbs up for the tabletop, oldie... and a jumping 2 more giving a 12, for using dowels and not Dominos.

If your first cut is too short... Take the second cut from the longer end... LBD

With such a table you are always victorious.

Nice, Tom! I’ve got a hex table like that which split when we moved to NM and all the wood shrunk, but it had wider straight boards around the edges. I’m going to be replacing it with a round replacement, and I may steal a few of your ideas when I get to that.

May you have the day you deserve!

Good looking table, lots of neat ideas well done.   Nice.

Dave, feel free to steal away, that's what this site is all about, sharing ideas.
Little Black Duck, Domino's never occurred to me, I've never seen otherwise.
