I had some wood that I could tell was filled with bugs. Before getting rid of it all, I cut into a few pieces and decided to enhance the work of the bugs. I used some tinted epoxy to fill, stabilize and keep more bug poop from coming out when you shake them.

Wood type: Pin Oak
Finish: 7 really thin coats of pure Tung oil.
Bug type: Ivory Marked Longhorn beetle

Awesome used of "pretty" wood where the shape/size has limitations. Free-form art IMO.

Are they heavy enough to stay put or did you use some kind of no-skid pad or stuff them full of gold?

cool look swirt. i hope there are no live ones left inside ? i made a mrytlewood slab table for my brother once that had a few live ones left. he just waited and they eventually died.

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment,somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.

@SplinterGroup they are decently heavy but not enough to contain unruly books. If any of these books had a slouch, they would likely overpower the bookend. They are better suited for small paperback books than the large ones in the photos.

@Pottz They had a few live ones when I cut into them but then I put them in a toaster oven on 300 degrees for a few hours. That took care of them. I have had a few of my larger creations let a few bugs loose though.
