Mealworm Bird Feeder in Pine

I made this Mealworm Feeder in Pine, and burned the wood using the Japanese Shou Sugi Ban technique to help make it more rot-resistant.  The entries on both sides are intended for small birds.  I tinted the wood in a 2-tone fashion, and finished it with spar urethane for added protection.

Looks great. I like how you finished it and made the top look like it’s covered with green algae or moss.

What technique did you use to get that green effect?

Did you use glass or plexiglass?

One member here mocked my woodworking ability said I should take a kid to Lowes and learn to make a bird house. I could certainly learn how to do it from you.

You’re taken it to a new level.

For the green (and reddish) effect, I used these powdered tints that you dissolve in water.  I got them at Rockler.  I'm sure you could even use food coloring as long as you seal the dried/tinted wood afterwards using some type of an outdoor urethane, for instance.

Plexiglass used here.
