Plane till

Needed to create some more space on my tool wall, so I made this plane till to condense my planes a bit.  In the past I've been overly meticulous with plans and dimensions and trying to get everything perfect... so I'm pushing myself to just allow the designs to unfold as I'm going.  This has actually been much more enjoyable for me.  As an experiment I made this one with zero measurements.  It's made out of scrap plywood and maple.  I just took a piece of scrap, laid out my parts, marked and cut.  I took a guess at angles and matched it up on my miter saw.  Still have no idea what angle this ended up being.

There is a place for plans.  For example, had I put a little forethought into the clasps, they could have been much easier to make and functioned better.  I think I made the recesses a bit too deep, which made the top clasps much bigger than they need to be (i.e. if the plane sits down into the bottom holder 1/2", the top holder needs to be 1" deep to allow that 1/2" travel and still have enough overhang to hold the top in when it's seated).

This one was all glue and brad nails - just quick assembly to keep the project moving.  I allowed a little extra time to trim it out a bit.  Turned out nice, I think!  And it meets the goals - holds my planes.

C&C welcome!
jams good to see you posting. that till came out real nice. but whats this thing you call, "wall" space ? 😎

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.

That looks fantastic!  There's nothing plane about it.  😁
No puns it just looks good and very workable.   Nice work.

Thanks everyone!  Wish I could do more, but the kids are keeping us busy.  On the plus side they're getting old enough to use some tools - we just finished up some pine wood derby cars that took a few weeks.
Looks like a fine addition. Functional and with a vintage shop ‘look’ that’s very appealing to me! Nicely done.

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".
