Double bed with 3D artwork as bedhead

Made this bed for us couple of years ago already. You wouldn’t think how much work goes into a bed before you try to make one.

The frame is beech, the 3D bedhead is cherry (to match with endtables and a chest of drawers in our bedroom), and the slats are ash.

The bed can be taken to (heavy) pieces: Festool domino hardware and dry wood dominoes are used for attaching the rails to the ends. Some nuts and bolts as well to attach the legs to the sides.

Here are some process pictures to give you an idea how the 3D bedhead was made.

P.S. I’m new here. Username pottz promised you’d be gentle ;)

Antti welcome buddy so glad you took my invite. as you'll see were an active bunch here. we appreciate people that share their work and will give you feed back as opposed to that dead forum. this head board is fantastic, keep the projects coming. you need help just ask.

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.

Lots of good work into the bed, especially the headboard.
Very impressive!! I appreciate the hard work that went into it. The design is attractive.
Thanks guys for the warm welcome! Since making this bed, I’ve also made beds for our both children. I’ll post them when I have some more time. Our son’s bed is especially interesting. He is mentally handicapped & seriously autistic, but physically very active (and at 18yrs the size of a grown man). He has broken all store-bought beds so far with his take-offs and landings. This one is indestructible!
heck youve already got as many comments here in one day as you did there in over 3 years ! congrats.

Really nice work! And thanks for posting the project pics of it as well!

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

A real eye bender, beautiful!

I can appreciate the determination to align all those tenons for the glue up!

Welcome!
This is a great design with masses of visual impact. Looks really well made too.
Love the design of the headboard.  What did you use for finish?  The cherry looks great.
Fantastic result!  Beautiful!
BB1 asked about the finish: I always use (several layers of) Osmo Color oilwax, and then a light touch with very fine steelwool or better yet a synthetic pad to get the natural matt shine. This has been my go-to for over 10 years. Once I learned that this is used for hardwood floors and some of the most well known Finnish professional woodworkers use it also, I was  convinced. Super easy to use / apply, and a little dust spec or two during the curing will not ruin anything👍
A very nice design and interesting build description.
WOW...That is a great project. I love it. The wave of the headboard is outta sight!!
