Bunkbed

The grandkids are visiting in June with their mom. Last year, the kids slept on the floor as their visit happened very quickly and there was no time to build anything.

This is our smaller home—it’s a 2/2 with a sunroom—and fitting two families is “snug”.
So, knowing they need a place to sleep and/or play, Mrs G commissioned this.

The upper mattress frame is Douglas Fir using box joints for strength and slats sitting in a rebate. I designed the bed around the closet nook and mattress size. The main structure and ladder are milled out of framing lumber. The rails are Cypress.

Fine work fitting that into the space, function rules!

Kudos for braving the box joints on the timbers, that takes care to even try but the joints look like you pulled it off perfectly.

I take it you are going to put a mattress down below? As a kid I would have traded away all my string and marbles for a bunk bed (as long as I got the top).

Only "quibble" is having the step tongues on the top side, Kids ya know!

Yes, there will be a floor mattress.

You’re correct—I should have flipped them over.

Having said this, the rungs are milled from 1-1/2” stock and the grand kids probably don’t weigh 50 pounds.
The way it’s put together, there’s zero racking for the bed or ladder.
The mattress frame is bolted into the frame using brass inserts in the 4 bed legs. There’s a wooden L-bracket screwed into the back of the mattress frame and up into a ladder rung—it’s barely visible in two pictures. The ladder is also secured to the front corner leg from behind. The mattress frame is attached to the back wall through a stud.
And the rails tie the bed frame to the ladder.

I bounced and jumped on it myself and nothing moved.
It’s a brick ch*thouse.
Nice build!

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Let the little dears suck it up... at least loose the mattress and blankets for some sheets of newspaper

If your first cut is too short... Take the second cut from the longer end... LBD
