Mrs G asked me to make a round umbrella table for our community dock.
The main requirements were 36” diameter because that’s what fits and a height of about 24”.
And, make it in about a day because our eldest daughter’s family arrives today.
The base is made using old 4x4’s which were recently removed from the horseshoe pits along with some PT offcuts from another outdoor project I’m doing.
The top is 5/4 decking.
I had to learn how to calculate the linear feet needed for the top. The deck boards are still green and wet so they’re not glued together. They’re laid side by side and will shrink nicely.
Figuring out how to make a base which would secure the boards was interesting.
I made a half-lapped 36” X 36” cross and laid it across the diagonal of the boards, then added two pieces to fit into the intersection to support the end boards.
I made a beam to draw the circle and cut the top with a jigsaw.
A belt sander made quick work of smoothing the edge and adding a bit of round over to the top.
I added screws from the ends of the end boards into the adjacent ones to support those two pieces better.
It’s rock solid.
