small side table with "free" material

I had some "L" angle with holes in it that I thought would make good table legs. They were part of a metal cabinet that I dismantled. There were also some square head 1/4"-20 nuts and bolts. I got the wood from Lowes/Home Depot; whenever I went to the store, I'd go to the cutting center and ask to have the scrap pieces. Once I got enough, I cut them down, glued them together and planed the slabs. I wanted contrasting colors, so I used the orangest stain I could find, along with this teal blue paint I had from another project. I connected the metal legs to the top with the 1/4" bolts and inserts. I use it at work for my lunch pail.

Nicely done! And free is always good...

Gives it an industrial look, and I do like the color pairing. Free is always good, repurposed is in everyone's best interest, world has enough trash/junk.

None of the BORGs around here ever have any "scrap, scratch and dent wood" available. There is one guy who has all of them under contract, and he buys it all for pennies on the dollar, and builds houses with it. His houses hardly stand out at all, with all of that crooked wood, you would think they would.

:-)
Colors are nice. We have what’s called Cull lumber at my HD and it’s 70% off. Did you joint the edges of of the wood for the top?

I hope the edges of the angle at the top of the table aren’t too sharp. You can also add a bottom shelf.

I hope those legs don’t start walking away at your work.

Thanks. I've seen the cull lumber and it's usually more crooked than wet spaghetti. They bundle it up and make you buy the bundle, I think. Still, maybe I'll keep an eye out and see if there's anything useful.

I didn't have a jointer at the time, so I used my table saw with a long fence extension. I glued all the pieces together, then used a planer sled on my planer to get one face on the the laminated assembly straight/flat, then flipped it over to palne it to thickness. It worked fairly well.

The edges are crisp, but not sharp. A bottom shelf will likely be added to version 2! :)

I hope no one steals them as well, but I think i'd try to be flattered that they thought the table was cool enough to take. I had some more of this material, but I stupidly gave it away as part of a blast cabinet. It's not easy to find.

I was asking if you joined it because it came out so well.

Our HP cull lumber is sold by the piece. I got some great wood from it and also melamine for table saw and band saw jigs. Keep up the great work BTL.
Our HD cul lumber is sold as singles, but it’s rare to find anything in there that’s even worth the 70% ‘purple’ discount. Once in a while I’ll find something wide enough that I can cut it down and part it out to make useful pieces…once in a while…

And there’s never any hardwoods in there. Just junk construction lumber and fence boards mostly, and a loooot of 1x2 strips that are totally boomerangs…

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Thanks! I'm pleasantly surprised it turned out as well as it did.

There is some new lumber there that I might take a closer look at and see if there's enough for a project I have in mind. I hope they sell it in a bundle.
Yeah, there's never anything good; I think they figure why not try and sell it?
