Getting High with MFT and ATD

After going to all the effort to make this ATD shelf (Above The Door) shelf with my MFT  from some of my stash of InGlass pallet timber, I am not sure it was such a good idea, hence Its only sealed and not painted to match the kitchen

It came about from me getting sick of having "stuff" stashed in the microwave to be off the bench and out of the way, and then needing to unpack it every time I wanted to use the microwave.

Even the little shelf I made some time ago was full.

Construction:-
Fairly basic construction:- cut up 6 pieces to rough lengths, then  Jointed and thickness and then rip sawn the edges parallel.
Used a basic butt joined Herringbone pattern joints to complete the task.

Overall left hand wing is 840 mm no surprises there just a little bigger than a standard doorway, and  the right hand side is 1020 mm.
edge finishing was to be profiling on the shaper but it may come later if I decide to keep the shelf above the door, its a bit high that's all and there is no other space in an open area available just now.
I used No 20# biscuits and butt jointed lengths.
The corners were going to be rounded but ended up doing a 45 deg chamfers for the time being.

Although it didn't need be as a precision angle needing the MFT but it just goes to show "junk" timber if prepared can produce precise results.

If your wondering why I have so many Plastic "Take away" containers I do a cook up on the weekends and have prepared meals for the week ready to just heat and eat, easy as all I need is a fork and bottle opener and its dinner time!

Vegemite?  Could you be any more Australian? 😉

Necessity is the mother of invention.  Looks like a good solution to me!
Soooo much vegemite….

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

When you run out of storage, don't start clearing out, just add more space 👍
The interleaving is a smart idea to get the width and corner strength. I also like that it is self supporting (as long as your trim is fastened well). Just gotta keep the shelf corner against the wall from popping up.

Go get yourself a case of vegemite and start prepping for the apocalypse! Great utility build Rob!
This is the problem with Kitchens, only so much storage for your TONS of Vegamite. Seriously they can be limiting, it's at that time you either don't have all the items you really want to have, need to move, or find room for more storage.

You took unused space that everyone has, and converted it to storage, this is a beautiful thing. Dress it up, and go with it.
Dress it up, and go with it.
All this Vegemite talk and this comment makes me wonder where LBD has disappeared to?
well done rob. yeah the duck has been very quiet lately. he's been on here lurking though. if this doesn't bring him out nothing will !

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.

Hey ,
whatever turns your crank...go for it. It looks like it will work but will it have a lip on it so you won't get hit from falling Vegemite? There is sure plenty there!!

You're right Bruce...Ducky should weigh in on this!! He might have seen this post and ran out for more Vegemite!!

Cheers, Jim ........................ Variety is the spice of life...............Learn something new every day

Yes Rob, Some of the “pallet timber” when dressed is beautiful stuff.
Good solution!
Problem solved well 👍

Life’s Good, Enjoy Each New Day’s Blessings

Great idea Rob...It's remarkable how we are able to create space...Great solution!!!!

Good job, I would have to build a stool to just reach it.
OK I have some feedback.
HokieKen hah ha we couldn't survive without our vegemite
RyanGi See above and yes we are Happy Little Vegemites and have been for many years
SplinterGroup The corner has been chamfered to 45 deg to allow it to fit into the two walls and is screwed onto the door trim at the edges otherwise yes self supporting but I didn't need to have surprise during the night or while I was cooking!
GeorgeWest Yes LBD is a bit quiet but I can assure you he is in good health
Pottz LBD maybe its hibernation or duck shooting season in Melb but as above he is OK
Jim Jakosh Jim its too high for staching vegenite up there see above for an LBD welfare check
Crowie Totally agree there are som really nice feature finds in the pallett pile, pity there was not enough to build something bigger
CLIFF OLSEN thanks I guess you could call it "thinking above the door" !!
mel52 Yes agree a stool would be handy but I just get a chair and a junk shop grabber
