WALKING STICK MADE FROM BOAGAINVILLIA GROWING IN MY BACK YARD

This Walking Stick was made from a thick branch of Bougainvillea growing on a big steel mesh fence in my back yard. I decided to remove it and plant something else.   Boy Oh Boy.  What a Job!!!  I had to wear big gloves up to my elbows as this shrub is covered in huge thorns that will cut exposed flesh to ribbons.
While cutting I noticed a Particularly Sturdy long thick branch..... I thought.  Thats a Walking Stick, so I cut it and put it aside to dry out for several months.   Then after removing all the thorns and getting rid of any bark/skin it was possible to cut the stick to length and the handle was able to be cut and trimmed to size... then after a lot of hand sanding, it was coated with numerous coats of Polyurethane sanded between coats.

A Rubber walking stick stopper was glued and pushed over the end of the stick.  I don't use a stick myself, maybe one day I will.
I went into the City and strutted about using the stick just to try it out.  I felt very important

It was a good fun project.
Kind regards.... Cliff.

nice stick, well done cliff. i know boug all too well ! although stupid me planted 3 new vines recently. but those will be maintained on trellises about 8ft tall max ! it is beautiful though.

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.

That is really cool, Cliff. We have a lot of bougainvillea plants in our Az. park and never thought of using a stalk for a walking stick!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Rob,
Although a very attractive shrub when in flower.  A very nasty bush because of the thorns.  A good deterrent to burglars if grown in the right spot.

A Black Tie Event while holding the Stick would be a good Outing Picture.

Hi Pottz.
Thank you.  Your 8 feet Trellises will be perfect.  Just high enough to maintain them.  Trimming and Pruning.  Any higher and it can be a dangerous stepladder exercise to maintain.  But I agree with you.  They are Beautiful.

Hi Jim,
Thank you.  Yes, Bougainvillea would grow very well in Arizona.  I also had never thought of the branches/stalks being of any use.  But when I saw the thickness and strength of this piece.  I was very pleasantly surprised.
I don't think I will grow them again, I feel more inclined to use the space and trellis for something I can eat. Maybe Beans or Cucumbers.
Regards .. Cliff.
Nice use of what most people would find as scrap. Maybe you could donate this to an elderly care facility as you don't need it, shame to let it sit idle. There are some people that would love to have a uniquely handcrafted walking stick.
Yes PPE would be very necessary harvesting the timber Cliff.
Beaut walking stick, so much nicer than my store bought one.

Hi Tom
I have Friends further North in a Small Town. They are very involved in their community, I have sent items before to them.
So perhaps they would  like some walking sticks....Great Idea!!!

Hi Peter,
Thank you.  Yes, I have certainly learned the hard way in picking up Bougainvillea without gloves.
