I don't know what others do with offcuts, but I save them, in bins, on the shelf, wherever works.
For me, I am tickled to be able to sell my wood offcuts, lol
Eventually I have to do something with the overflowing bins and shelves.
I have about 30+ bins for short offcuts that are sorted by species. Often I can dip into these bins to find material to make a small part or knob.
To make the Roach Clips I use offcuts from materials that I might have already laminated or used in other projects. The weed is legal here in Canada, keeps everyone numb to the truth of what's going on I guess, so they are but a classy flashback to the 60's and 70's. I fiddle fart around here and there putting them together and before ya know it, there is a lil pile. I don't know that one could profit if they had to make these from scratch, it was only because 90% of the laminating was already done.
To make the Key Fobs I pull thin strips from the shelves, the thickness can vary, but I look for widths that are the same. Ready for glue. Now, while I glue up the Roach Clips one at a time for the most part, the Key Fobs are made easier by prepping long stock, then cutting them to size. Since these are offcuts, they can vary in size a lil, which works for me.
With just these few stock pieces glued up, I made 50+ Key Fobs and at $10 each, that's my kind of kindling!
Now I don't attend the art and craft shows myself, I have friends that attend and have a booth, and so they give me a lil corner of their table, and I help chip in on the booth cost. Win/win.
To put the 45 degree edge on the pieces I made a zero clearance fence for my router. I could have made it longer, but it worked great anyway. After all that I clear coated them all with glossy wipe-on varathane. What I don't sell, I often gift to friends and strangers.
I guess cleaning up the shop is more than just broom action.
Great use of scraps Snake... I initially thought they wre ear rings which would go down well in my downtown Churchill to replace peoples rocks... in their heads... yes, plural... like Tasmanians) who are renowned for 2 each (Aussie joke .
Know the feeling... I also have issues tossing my small scraps. Love your organisation, though it's a luxury delimited by space and what I've sacrificed is wasted, as when I need scraps, I tend to make new rather than ferret around for hours in the scattered locations for old.
If your first cut is too short... Take the second cut from the longer end... LBD
