Chokecherry and resin goblet

Almost three weeks into this project. It started as a chokecherry branch which cracked a lot as it dried. I filled the cracks with resin, turned the goblet a bit, then filled more.

After finish turning, I finished it with homemade friction finish of BLO and shellac, and will be putting a few coats of Tru-Oil on the outside, and possibly a coat of clear epoxy on the inside. I haven’t decided if it should be a usable drinking vessel or not.

The goblet is 5½ inches tall (14cm) and 3½ inches (8cm) diameter. The walls are 3/16 inch (4¾ mm) thick.

May you have the day you deserve!

Really good looking goblet.    Resin in this case works great.

Way to go, Dave. That resin sure helps compete a project!!

I vote for drinking vessel, even if you never use it as such.
Great looking goblet Dave.

So cool Dave....extremely well done!

The fill really looks great (homage to NM chilies!)

I'd say seal it just in case someone tries to drink out of it, but otherwise make it a display piece.
beautiful. ill vote seal it also.

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.

Looks great, love the colors, I would seal it.
Very nice Dave, like the others, the resin and those colors make for a beautiful goblet.
Thanks, folks. Looks like I’ll be sealing the inside later today. Wish I had found an old bbq rotisserie motor by now, so I didn’t have to rotate it by hand to distribute the epoxy evenly, but I haven’t yet.

This is beautiful, Dave! Sorry, it's about a different project but I bought the Tru-oil after your cane project and now I'm looking for good straight grain wood for a cane:) My grandpa wanted one after seeing what you made!

No name noobie here

Thanks, YRTi. No worries. I like the Tru-oil, though I did have a problem with it earlier this week. Accidentally had it too thick on this goblet, and after 8 hours it was still sticky, so I sanded it off and started over on that section. Be careful to avoid having it too thick, and it works great.

Nice project Dave! It would end up being a Christmas piece for sure in our house.
Thanks, Steve! Not sure what’ll happen to it. I’ve got about a half-dozen small things I’ve turned since my back surgery; the lifting restriction is finally gone, so I can work bigger now, but I’ve still got three little projects I’m not done finishing. I suspect I’ll drag them along to the senior center for lunch some day and if anyone expresses interest, they get a prize.

Thanks, Devin!
