Christmas boxes for the Men

Have always made the girls a box at Christmas, never the guys, so this year a box for the Son, Grandson, Grandson-in-law.  Extra one for me.  Basic design came from Fine Woodworking Issue.   2 of the boxes are of Butternut with Walnut trays and lid lift.   2 are Cherry with Mahogany inserts in top and bottom, walnut trays and lid lifts.  Brusso hinges, and self made jute handles..   Handles are wedged in 3/8" diameter holes in the sides of the boxes with a touch of titebond II.
Boxes are 12" x 8" x 4.75"    Wall thickness is .75".   Box joints on the corners cut on the router table.
Trays are .25" thick walnut, with cork bottoms and center handles wrapped with Jute.   Mitered corners with splines.   Splines cut on table saw with shop made jig.
Finish is Osmo Wood Wax finish, clear thin.   Darkens the wood some particularly the walnut.   2 coats of this oil based finish.
While the girls boxes are kind of a "tradition" these are not and intend to be a one time thing.
Questions welcome.

Chest thumping "manly" Ron!

I recognize the Pekovich elements from when he was on a recent woodworkingshop episode, That jute application is trick.
Yes frame and panel top and bottom.   Cherry frame, Mahogany panel on 2 boxes.   All Butternut on the other two boxes.
Thanks for the comments.

Really nice boxes Ron, nice tight dovetails, the handles are a nice touch - they remind me of a seafarers trunk, and the frame & panel lids top this off really great.
I looked at the one Pic showing the inside handle mounting, wondering why you didn't just pass the cord in one hole and out the other. Just curious.
Passing the cord through would interfere with the smooth removal and replacement of the trays.  Same if a knot inside the box for cord ends.  Even  If the cord was passed through there would still be two cord ends to deal with on each handle.
I was a bit concerned on the way the cords were fastened in the article.  Testing their method I found it quite simple to do and very secure.

Those tight dove tails are actually box joints.   Done with Incra jig on the router table.   My usual way to make box joints.

Thanks for the comments.

So nice! Unfortunately, these are too nice and I think you are now starting a new tradition with boxes for the men too. 😉

Thanks for the comments.
No new traditions, maybe retire the old ones.   Time for kids and grandkids to pamper Gramps!  Ha.

If your first cut is too short... Take the second cut from the longer end... LBD
