Pushing Log... full of treats...for the John Ball Zoo
This is another toy for the animals at the zoo. They push this log around and treats fall out of the 4 1" holes I put in it. I didn't get the real plan until I had the pockets milled on both halves. The original photo showed a pocket on both sides so that is what I went with. I milled one of the pockets extra deep.
It is an 8" hard maple log- 20" long- that is split in two and then the insides were flattened on the mill with a 3" fly cutter and the pockets were milled in for the treats.That long V block I made a couple weeks ago worked just perfect for holding it. I was going to clamp it to the V block but could not finish the top surface so I mounted it with 8 screws in from the bottom.
I drilled and counter bored two holes for the bolts that hold it together. I used 1/2-13 threaded rod with the nut and washer brazed on one end. I also put in 2 3/8" stainless steel dowel pins to hold the alignment during assembly and when it gets knocked around.

This wood is so green that it does not cut clean at all!!!!!!!!!!

Now there’s a unique project! Very cool.
When I first saw it, I wondered if you were a fan of the old TV show Twin Peaks. There was a character in it known as the Log Lady, and she carried around a small log (about the size of yours) that had mystical powers.

I agree with Pottz, the zoo needs to be renamed after their best benefactor for animal toys.
Interesting design, kind'a like a learning toy for the animals, and as soon as they realize orientating it with holes down yields a treat or two, it'll never be upright again.

Hi Ron, I don't know about the mystical powers but it was a lot of mystical work being all stringy like that!! Dry wood sure cuts cleaner !! If I had a 10" jointer it would have been much easier
Hi Tom, I think these are pushed around by wild pigs ! The plan called for an optional 1" mesh screen to slow down the food dropping. I did not have any screen but milled a relief in the one half in case they want to use one.
