These are more zoo projects. They want a number of tunnels made from logs. I cut these out of the batch of logs my buddy cut for me on Saturday. They are about 9 1/2" diameter. I cut 2 pieces 9" long and split them and hollowed out 2 to see if she wants more of this size. They want bigger and smaller ones , too. This is Hard maple and cut out with a chain saw and a round chain saw on a 4 1/2" angle grinder. It is not real pretty inside but I don't think the turtles will mind if there is shade!

Thanks for all the nice comments. Hi Larry. I have 8 1" thick slices of a log that they call "cookies". I'll deliver all of what I have made so far tomorrow. I have two logs sliced in half that I'll mill pockets in the center and bore3 holes in one side and close them up. They put treats in them. Right now that are pretty rough from the chain saw cut so I'll flatten the surfaces in the mill with a 4" fly cutter and then do the milling! I have to be quick about it because this wood was cut last Saturday and it is moving!
Hi Danny, She showed me the sample of what she wanted and it was a purchases one. I tried to band saw the center out but the wet green wood took the blade on its own direction so I used the chain saw.

This appears to me to be an ideal situation for gifting a project, plus you get to keep the removed interior. It looks like removal of the core via chainsaw didn't yield very big or long pieces of the maple, but perhaps big enough for making pens. I gave savaging the interior as one nice chunk some thought. Maybe you can separate the shell and core by standing on end, slowly driving a hefty chisel down around the circumference, thus popping it out. Hopefully, with nice straight grain, it would work as I'm imagining it. If not, you haven't lost anything. I'm sure you've made the turtles' day.
Hi Tom. The inside of those tunnels came out in about 12 pieces of wood and 30 gallons of chips. It all went in the trash barrel. Normally I would burn it out back in the fire pit but it is way too dry to have a fire now.
Hi Rob. I have no idea what kind of turtles they have. I might find out tomorrow. You should make one for your turtle to keep him out of the sun. With a dark shell like that, it must get pretty hot inside it!!
