Wood and sound

I recently became obsessed with building my own horn loaded speakers and this is what I finally got around to building. It’s an mdf substrate for the rosewood veneer, and the horns are solid Purple Heart with zebrawood fins that I had some off cuts of laying around. I am thoroughly enjoying these and my wife is slowly coming around to them too.

That looks fantastic. How is the sound?

They sound awesome Brian. I thought that woodworking in general required a lot of math then I decided to take on this project. They are crystal clear even at a minimal volume but when I crank them up you can hear them 3 blocks away and they are like listening in the room. The neighbors were not to thrilled when I finished them because of course I had to test them. Haha

By the way did you ever attempt the table

I have not built the table yet but it’s 100% going to be done. I just have to get through some other things first. It might be another 2 years, but it will get done. :-)

It looks great. Did you have plans with measurements for specific drivers or you created the desing by yourself ?

Michael
First off thank you. I created everything from scratch. I did quite a bit of research in the beginning on the specific drivers I had which are the JBL E130 and the radian compression drivers for the horns. I was able to fortunately find all of the parameters online looking through archives for volumes of the boxes etc. and then I had to calculate those into the design I had in mind. The horns are based on westlake horns but I had to adjust them a little for what I wanted after talking to a few different horn builders, since I wanted wide dispersion but also wanted to keep the horns outside of the box. If you have questions I can certainly help. Also I have drawings for the horns that I created as well.

Actually, I’m planning to build my own speakers using the drivers I used in my car. Since the drivers are not the high-end quality and was mainly designed for use in car, I’m not sure If all the work would be worth it.

On the other side, there is a 3 way speaker designed by professionals. The price would be higher, but the quality of the sound would be much higher as well.
