Candle sticks
I picked up a Harbor Freight lathe a while back. I turned my mallet handle and a paper towel holder when I first got it but this is my first real lathe project. Glued up some scrap wood last night and turned these today. It’s pretty cold here so I just finished them in some paste wax. I’m not thrilled with the finish. Is it too late to put another type of finish on them? I’ve also realized I need to get some decent gouges and a method to sharpen them. The HF gouges are junk. I was using a whetstone to sharpen. It worked but left a lot to be decided.

I like the design and you did well in turning then. Have you tried burnishing the wood with paper from a brown paper bag, or going back and applying a coat of paste wax applied with 0000 steel wool? Won’t be glassy, but the satin finish will be so smooth. :)

PMB, I’ve never heard of the burnishing with a brown paper bag. I will try the paste wax and steel wool. Thanks, its nice to have a couple more ideas in my mental tool box.
