Cedar bar/railing tops

That is some beautiful cedar and some beautiful craftsmanship Wes. Might I ask what kind of preservative or top coating you used? I have a supply and looking to make something from it.

Thanks Jack.. All I put on for now was pure tongue oil (not the furniture grade). The oil held up well. However this spring I may give them a fresh sanding and try a spar varnish of some sort. I chose just oil to start due to the fact that this cedar went from standing tree to install in three days (wanted to slow the drying). well that and i like just being able to reapply. I’m not sure what i’ll try i’ve not found a clear coat that stands up to the beating of the sun.

Very cool. Oil seems to have done the trick. I used Danish oil on a couple of small cedar things i made and it didn’t bring out the color the way i hoped. I have some raw linseed oil. Maybe I’ll give that a try next time. I have a couple of pieces left from a cedar tree in my yard that came down in a heavy snow storm. I love the color and it’s very grand on something as wide as what you made.

Thanks guys, the oil did work nice, kept them from drying to fast and held up good. However they do need to be revived after spring, so I’m going to try some different products.
Brian I wouldn’t use the linseed oil on outside project, I did a test on cedar on my deck, linseed oil faded and disappeared almost immediately, where the pure tongue oil looked good into winter.
