What to use to make a rattle rattle?

Got some new neighbors in the ’hood who are expecting a baby before Christmas. Figured I could make a nice wooden rattle to give to the little spud. Better than a drum for the new parents, I figure…

Anyway, what’s the preferred material to make a rattle rattle? I’ve got lots of smallish scraps of wood. Also steel and brass. Or rocks from the driveway. What should I use?

Thanks!

May you have the day you deserve!

I think Jim Jakosh has been using steel ball bearings?

Maybe dried beans, non toxic if they ever escaped.

I think "bb" sized shot would sound more "soft" than larger bearings, but I dunno what kids like.
You could use Mexican jumping beans for a self powered unit!
Only thing I can see is having the rattly material well sealed so the kids don't eat it.
yeah jim has made many.

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.
