I noticed over the last few years the shelves had less product on them.

yep the first sign that it's going down hill !

No, the shelves have been full.  This did not start in the “last few years.”

Tucson Woodcraft is a locally owned franchise.  We’re the little guy.  When Home Depot and Amazon can sell products at, or below our costs, how can we compete?  A handful of loyal customers, and gotta-have-it-now buyers kept us afloat, but it couldn’t last.

… add stupid minimum wage initiatives and regular increases for lease rates, and even a $1M/year business cannot survive.  The costs are too high.

The fact is the true minimum wage is ZERO.  That’s what you earn when the rate goes high enough to make it impossible to keep you on staff.  Thank your local politicians.  They are stupid, do not understand basic economics, and are pandering to those dumber than they are.

BTW, this is Rich.  If you shopped there, you probably met me.  I started at Tucson Woodcraft in Feb of 2000.  It’s been the best retirement job I could have had.  I met some great friends—some assholes too—but it’s been a great ride.

We had only one Woodcraft in the entire state, stayed open for a few years then closed. I'm thinking it was also a franchise.

Had all the stuff, even the classes, but not sustainable (this was before Amazon, etc.)
sounds like time to stock up rich ! maybe hide the best stuff until the last week ?

Nah.  The employee discount is far better than clearance pricing. I grabbed all I wanted before the vultures got to it.

so are they discounting festool ?

No, Festool and SawStop can’t be discounted.  I get Festool at cost though, which is about 20% off retail.  Consumables margin is higher.  I can explain more after 5/31.

true normally but if your going out of business what can they do ? stop selling to you ! if it's a franchise woodcraft can say, we told them they cant but they did, out of our control !

The customer wouldn’t be able to register it for the warranty since the amount on the receipt would differ from retail.  Festool requires an image of the receipt to register the tool.

damn they go it locked down !!!! but couldn't the owner of your franchise say, ill throw in a 100 buck blade as a bonus ? how would festool know ? ill bet that happens a lot !

If you were dishonest enough you could ring it up at retail so the customer has the receipt, do a return and sell it discounted.  That would be sleazy.

do you think small guys do it ? ill bet some do !

I’m sure they do.  Store employees get special pricing at around 20% below dealer cost from Jet, Rikon, etc.  I was able to buy Kreg at 50% off.

Festool once had employee pricing, but it was abused and they ended it.  I don’t know how much it was below cost, but it ended before I was eligible.

festool is very strict and wont give an inch on their policy. just ask rockler when they got booted ! when i was still working they came in and wanted us to join in. i said nope, i price based on cost the way i want and need, vendors are not allowed to dictate how we sell, period. that ended that conversation real fast !

Is it likely because woodworkers are making their purchases online. This is what I tend to do. I live outside the city and it saves me the long drive back and forth where several items are only available online. Also, I have begun to notice that the brick and mortar stores don't carry a lot of stock, it is only available from their distribution warehouse.

your right norman and thats why they are all going away. we are all doing business online because it's easier and we get what we want in a day or or two ! my rockler though was always well stocked and had what i wanted. so im sad they closed !
