Derecho Today
Late this morning, A severe storm swept thru my area. We lost several large pine trees and a lot of large branches. It was a huge rainstorm with strong winds, 2" of rain and lightning. I see that several tornadoes were reported in the region. I saw that it is reported as a Derecho which is a storm with fast moving front and severe straight line winds. In my area, there are over 300,00 people without power. I am included but my whole house generator is working great. I think it will be several days before power is restored.

even here we had some weird weather this morning. we had some monsoonal moisture passing through manys time over the last month or more. rain here in august is like hens teeth. just north of me some areas had quick fast rain storms. crazy weather all over the US and the world this year.

At my age, I need the AC in the summer and heat in the winter. We bought it before the prices went up on everything. Today, it would cost me more than double what I paid.

We've been getting these storms all summer. It's not a passing thunder storm anymore. We had one the other day. The wind came in first blowing like crazy. Then the lighting and rain came. Had to drop an inch of rain in about 30 minutes.
well look at the heat europe has had this summer. records set in the UK and France. wild fires raging all over europe. canada has had huge fire problems. weve been pretty lucky here in socal, so far !

Years ago very near our old home we had one of those. It cut a swath through trees and woods between 40 to 100 yards wide, and it went for over 4 miles. When it passed through we had just gotten done framing that house, and blacking in the roof. We still took on over 6" of water into the basement. I feared for a few days of some serious insults that wouldn't just dry out, but dry out is what it did. 6 of my crew and I, plus my electrician, and his helper were there when the storm went through. Wet and all we sheltered in the basement through it. The actual destruction was a little over a mile away, but for us, it seemed like we were the storm.
People started stopping by about an hour after it passed to tell us about the bullet we had dodged. It was strange hearing this news, but later that afternoon all of us had driven past the damage path. A lot of OMG's uttered after that.
So I know what you went through. I've been within a mile of a cat 4 tornado before, and I would have preferred the tornado.
The damage path was very distinctive. All of the trees laid in the same direction, it looked just like a crew had gone through a heavily wooded mountain area where they were cutting in a path for electrical lines. Except this path was dead flat ground, starting from the East side of the Stillwater river cut, and going out into the country 4 miles. Past that heading East it's all farmland, and flat, some of the corn was down for a few miles more, but blowing over corn isn't that hard to do.
I'm with you on the whole house generator, we had one put in at that older home, and had one put in here too. It's a huge expense, until the power is gone, then you are just smiling. On more than one occasion we have slept over neighbors kids. 2 of the 3 from next door were very brittle asthmatics, and being too hot and stuffed into a sweltering house was a trigger for them both. We've had as many as 7 kids, and a vising FIL that was an old lung issue guy. Except for the bonfire it was like a camp out, only cooler. :-)
