Is this woodworking?

. . . or just working wood?  It's a lot of work and it is wood!

My husband has always taken care of the firewood each year.  Occasionally I have helped him, mostly driving the tractor to move it from the woods closer to the house.  That all changed in April when he had an OHCA (out-of-hospital cardiac arrest) which has a 6-9% survival rate to hospital discharge.  After 19 days in ICU, he was moved to the cardiac wing from where he was finally discharged on the 39th day . . . on hospice.  He had acute kidney failure and was not tolerating dialysis.  The dialysis nurse said he would be dead in 4 days, but the nephrologist gave him 2 to 12 days to live.

God had other plans and he continues to improve, but he is not yet able to handle cutting, splitting or ricking the wood.  I wasn't able to get the splitter into the woods or haul the large chunks out without his help so we resorted to purchasing some firewood this year.  That means it is up to me to stack it all.

So, since I haven't been able to get in much shop time, does this count as "woodworking"?  It is wood and it certainly is a lot of work!

A lot of my best turning pieces come from the wood pile so I think you qualify. You are looking for nice pieces to make something out of aren't you.....LOL

You could stack it like this if it makes you feel better

Best wishes for your husband.

he sounds like one tough guy. hopefully the recovery will continue. id say it's woodworking. hey maybe a diamond  in the rough will be found ? ive found some gems myself in wood piles.

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.

You hit that log just right with a maul and that perfect sized piece splits from it, then that is woodworking.

I don't think I have another 50 years of life left to accomplish that work of art in firewood.  My husband already thinks I'm slow (and he's right)!  Thanks for your best wishes.

Yes, he is pretty tough, but all the credit goes to the merciful, loving almighty God that we serve!  Thanks for your encouraging words.

My husband's the turner, but I have found some nice spalted oak that I'm saving for a special project!  (Nearly all of the firewood is oak and it really isn't all that interesting for turning.)

Wow, you are obviously a very strong person as is your husband. You're certainly doing a good job of dealing with the curve balls thrown at you. It certainly seems like you can hold the fort no matter what challenges you are given and yes, that is definitely woodwork!  Keep the faith.

God's plans always trump man's predictions.  Wonderful that you have one another.  ❤
And yes, still is woodworking/working with wood.

We must admit that it has been a very challenging year, but also the most rewarding of our lives.  "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble."  Psalm 46:1
It might be more accurate to change my handle here to WimpyWomanWoodworker!  (I like alliterations.)

My husband's cardiologist said something similar: "Why would they tell you that?  They aren't God!"
The truth is that they told him that because he was sent home on hospice with the "death drugs" which, if administered as hospice prescribes, will generally kill the person within two weeks.  Needless to say, we didn't do the drugs.

Thank you for the good wishes.

I've been "at it" now for parts of four days and I'm still not done.  It's a lot more wood and a lot more work than what I do in the shop!

It is woodwork!

It is also great exorcise.

I'm in fla now so no fireplace, but I do have a wood burning fire pit. I burn the cut offs there.

I hope your husband makes a full recovery.

Many thanks for the encouraging words.   I've got siblings in Florida for the winter and they said they had temps in the 20s, had to cover their plants, and were afraid of losing tropical trees.  Are you far enough south to have missed that cold snap?
