My plan is to have a unique bottom cover design for each of the pendant lamps, and the for the first one I used an "atomic age" motif. Perhaps fittingly, my first attempt was a bomb. I kind of expected that a thin piece of cherry might be a bit fragile, but the CNC milling went worse than I expected.
I went back to the computer and tweaked the design to increase space between some of the holes and also to create a large center hole to eliminate the really pointy ends caused by the converging lines. I also changed materials to using a 1/8" plywood substrate, with anigre veneer applied (I didn't have any cherry veneer).
This may look a little ragged here because of the upcut bit, but it cleaned-up pretty well. The extra strength of the plywood held together much better than a thin piece of solid wood.
The small tabs around the perimeter of the cutout keep it in place as it's being cut. They're easily cut with a utility knife and sanded smooth.
