Urban Ore #11: Wood is Good Co. 30oz carvers mallet

This is part 11 in a 35 part series: Urban Ore

Saw this and knew it was worth the $25 they were asking. Sure enough, these go for $55 new on eBay. Here I snagged it for less than half with zero shipping. Which is good because the 10.25% tax rate is enough of a pain at the register, we don’t need any more extra costs over the price tag.

Someone on my social media account said they have never seen one in brown. I looked it up and there brown ones are vintage while the new ones are all translucent green. Wouldn’t mind owning one of the green one’s too. We’ll see — if I end up using this enough, I might buy another (they make different sizes). People tell me that they love their Wood Is Good Co. mallets. I say, it feels great in the hand, though 30oz sure is some heft. A lot heftier than the Lignum Vitae carver’s mallet that I restored.

I've got the green version, really like it for bashing out mortises and other "duties"
I’ve got a green one too…good mallet!

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

The green ones are very pretty
Nice work!!

I haven’t done anything to it. I think it needs a coat of wax and it will be good to go. Some other people have suggested the handle is too slippery and some grip tape or hockey tape makes it better. I think I will go without and see how it works for me.

So basically this guy, I have heard from many, is great for wailing on wooden handled mortise chisels.
Also great for seating stubborn joints as it doesn't seem to ding up the wood like a ball peen hammer!
I was wondering about that, if this carver’s mallet could double as a joiner’s mallet
I use mine for just that purpose, especially on ‘tender’ wood…since my jointers mallet is probably a little harder than it should be.

Great addition to you tool arsenal. I've been turning them out of re-claimed lignum vitae stern bearing material from the polor class ice breakers. They come in at 20 oz. Everytime I meet a new woodworker in my area I make sure they get one.

Some of my most creative moments have been when I've had to cover up an error in my woodworking.

Beautiful, Joe!
