When I posted my Auto Adjust Clamps, I deliberately avoided mentioning this particular Rockler clamp as I’m sure I’m not the only bunny that saw them, thought they’d be useful, rushed out to buy them only to be disappointed…
The issue I had with them is the profile of the clamp face is too high for “standard” 19mm (even 3/4") stock when working on it, especially sanding,
unless you want to give the clamps face a facelift as well... and they are worse for thinner stock. They may be OK for thicker stock,
but you’ve probably never had issues holding them.
Having said that, they are not much worse than these Veritas Wonder dogs which have a lower profile,
though they are substantially thinner than 19mm.
While on the topic of these Wonder dogs (or any 19mm dogs), you can easily adapt them to 20mm MFT style dog holes with 1 or 2 layers of heat shrink tubing,
... just note that no amount of the tubing will reduce a 20mm dog to 19mm.
Before I found other means, I overcame my initial disappointment by 3D printing a new low profile face,
which provided little sanding issues for thinner stock,
One of my better uses for this “clamp” was for holding small pieces on my mitre saw.
Now a lot depends on what your mitre saw setup/comfiguration… I found that for small stock, all the included stock hold downs were too far positioned to be usable… even on a... wait for it... Fe$tool.
If you don’t have a t-track on the face of your mitre saw fence (like me), I created a backing board with a keyhole cut t-track to mount the clamp on
and clamp that to the fence,
With a bit of manipulation, you can optimise the hold down without interfering with the saw’s operations,
just make sure you pad out the other side of the saw,
which was a tad less intimidating than either of these past practices,
Alternatively, you can build your own small piece hold down, but you’ll have to wait for that to be posted later.
