Hopefully get this over to the gallery and see if the guy who wanted one is still interested. If not, It'll just add to the inventory.
The last little add-ons have been installed and the post is wired.
Of course this is all about the post, but when I built the first one , I made two shades. Still had to add the mica panels, so needed "stops" to hold the mica in place, but be removable if needed.
These stops are 1/4" square walnut, but have a corner knocked off. (end view) The corner makes for a smoother finished look inside the shade.
They are secured by 5/8" tiny brads. I need pilot holes so I found my drilling jig. You can see a "V" notch cut into the board with a fixed locator visible at the back. This locator lets me position each stop for symmetric drilling. I want the pilot hole to exit at one of the stops corners. Stop in place, drilling on the flat. #43 drill bit in a micro chuck which is chucked up into the DP's much lager chuck. Lots of chucks here!
Hole on the back side is in the right place.
Now I just use a punch and push the brads home by hand.
So that's that. I'll post the completed lamp as a project soon, hopefully with some good pictures!
Mr Splint, or is Mr Group?, either way. That is one beautiful lamp. I like the mixture of the multi-colored shade, and the aged copper piping with the wood structure. The mix of wood species also adds to the beauty. Nice work, if the guy who wanted one of these is no longer in need, I'm sure they will be a lineup of others waiting for a chance to secure this. 👍👍
Duck, I get the mica off of ebay. Had this stuff for several years from a guy who makes his own. Priced about the same everywhere I've seen it ($$). The shades are based on the Woodcraft? dimensions and one can get two shades from a single sheet. Not sure if the guy is still making it, last time He asked of I wanted free "scraps" and extra sheets and I got a whole bunch of large pieces.
Brought it outside this morning for some photos, early sunlight. Wish I had a better setup for these large things, something to puzzle over. Anyhoo, here are a few shots. I'll have more in a short project posting, still have a day so any requests for detail photos, please just ask!
The details are a standard for your projects. Always inspiring to me to design with the details better planned from the start for my own projects. I hope this sells for top $$.
Sweet work Bruce. That BE Maple was talking to me when I was looking at the pics. I've recently gotten some that busy. It's in 12" wide, x 20" long glue ups, totally covered, and on all of them written along the edge is the word REJECT. I simply cannot conceive what was a keeper piece. Anyhow it was in the clearance bin at my local WoodCraft. The new owner owns a very nice lumber yard, and a guy who owned a cabinet shop, going OOB, sold all of his lumber stock to Chad. What he didn't sell in the lumber store, went to his WoodCraft store as clearance stock. Got some insane Curly Maple, and some Quilted. Curly Cherry. Didn't spend 50 bux, and had to make 2 trips to get it out to the truck. Chad wasn't as interested, because all of it was around 4' in length, or less, and as lumber goes, that is useless. For an old ass boxmaker, it's primo length, hell most of the 8' long stuff I have is almost too heavy to lift anymore. I tried lifting a piece of Afromosia that is 6/4 about 15" wide, and 8'. I had to call my Wife to help.
