Grandson's First Christmas Gift

This was a gift for Christmas of 2016 when he was 1 year old.
This is based on the Ladybug Counting Blocks Puzzle Pattern from Sheila Landry Designs with a few modifications.
I chose to dye the bugs red & black. I also chose to add some curvature to the shell and head.

Most obvious is the addition of the "Bug House". As I was building the bugs I felt a storage box was going to be necessary. After pondering box ideas for a few days, I came up with the bug house. The door slides up to show off each bug in their "room".

I created the door layout in PowerPoint from some clipart and text.

The plans were easy to follow and instructions were clear.

The parents were more impressed than the grandson. A little advanced for a 1 year old. Now he enjoys playing with it. Between 2 birthday gifts and 2 Christmas gifts a year I'm getting plenty of toy building time!

Nice one Steve.
I’m reminded of an old song …..
“ ..it was a beetle house with Alexander Beetle coming out! “ 😂

The early bird gets the worm but its the second mouse that gets the cheese.

Very cool Steve! Also like that they're "bare foot friendly" if left out on the floor in a dark room 8^)
what a great gift for the little guy. nice work grandpa..

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.

Thanks guys! This one got played with for a few years. They are now old enough that is is mainly a decoration & a memory. The exception is when curious friends come over.
Very cute gift!  And those memories made...are priceless.
That was a nice gift, Steve. The storage box, er house, was a great touch. I’m glad all the critters survived for six years (and counting).
Thanks Barb!

Ron - I think the lid went missing for a while but showed up again 😀
That is cool Steve, and such a great learning gift made by Grandpa, something to treasure. Well done.
With the title Bug House, it got me to thinking about something for fireflies and such. I built a screen one for that purpose close to 25 years ago for the kids to catch fireflies.

Eric - I bet they had fun with that! No fireflies here ☹
Yea they did, and better that the old peanut butter jar. The grandkids are getting old enough now, so there may be a project in the spring.

That is more than just cute 'Rasmus... Took me a while to realise the dots were different.

Unfortunately I'm just a tad too old to make any grandkids.

If your first cut is too short... Take the second cut from the longer end... LBD

 Thanks LBD!
