<< This project was my entry for a contest on another site about 10 years ago.  The idea was to make something out of a single 8' 2X4.  I still have the match.  It lives on the mantle of our living room fireplace.  I gave the pencil to a math teacher at the high school to display in his classroom. >>

One of my favorite scenes in the movie This Is Spinal Tap involves a confusion between inches and feet that leads to a miniature stage prop. This is kind of the opposite of that. I now own a very large half-worn-out pencil and a stick match.

In the style of an online review, here are my findings.

The Pencil

PROS:
  • I will be surprised if I misplace it in my shop.
  • I do not find myself chewing on it.

CONS:
  • I have a hard time holding it behind my ear.
  • It is awkward to use for marking dovetails.
  • It is easy to overdo it with the eraser.

 The Match

PROS:
  • This is the perfect wood stove fire starter. It is a match and kindling in one.
  • It would probably be useful for signaling search aircraft.

CONS:
  • I don't smoke, but I imagine that there could be a danger using it to light a cigarette.
  • It would be cumbersome to take hiking.
  • I do not recommend the "light it on your fly" trick (don't ask why I say that).

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.

I was going to say, that is a pencil that will not get lost. The Match is cool too.

When I first came to the U.S., I learned the concept of the bigger the better. That's by far the best pencil and match I've ever seen.

No name noobie here

It looks like you use the eraser a lot... I guess when the lead is that big it takes a lot to remove a line. 😉
Cool stuff.
Caution:  Stand back 3 feet before striking match

Figuring out how to do something you have never done is what makes a good challenge.

Do you have a pencil sharpener that the pencil fits in?        Many years ago while living in the Tampa Bay area was a member of a woodworking club that had an annual 2 x 4 contest.     Your match and pencil would have won hands down.   Always a fun event.

Thanks Ron.

Good question about sharpening.  I think this would work:

Lucky that pencil has a hex side... if it rolled off your table, you'd never be able to lift it back up... as for that redhead, all mine had fat cankles!

If your first cut is too short... Take the second cut from the longer end... LBD

Both pieces are great, and bonus points for the Spinal Tap Stonehenge reference. Did you win the contest?
 Did you win the contest?

If I remember correctly, there were a gazillion categories so pretty much everyone won something.

Those are brilliant. Thanks for the smile you gave me Chuck.

And the laugh.
