Last year I was given walnut and mahogany from the estate of a friend whose wife’s grandfather passed away and I made a keepsake box for his wife from that wood. This year I was asked to make a couple more keepsake boxes for her family from more of that wood. Great finds from an old barn. The mahogany and walnut make a great combo. This was some great finds from inside an old barn. The mahogany is some of the prettiest I’ve seen.
Two of the three boxes went to her family. These are made from that walnut and mahogany from the estate. The third was a gift for my mother. It is made from that walnut of the estate and alder I had in the shop. Mom’s a big fan of knots and other defects. The walnut and alder makes another great combo. It is a combo I’ll do again with more of knotty walnut in the future. All three are hinged with brass pins, finished in satin lacquer, and lined in red velvet.
