Waterfall Bubinga and Maple keepsake box

Another keepsake box. This one is made from solid Figured Maple,  Maple veneered MDF and Quilted (Waterfall) Bubinga veneered MDF panels.

I hoard wood and so I’ve had the figured Maple used in this box around my shop for years just waiting for a project like this. The Maple veneered panel is the box bottom and was retrieved from the scrap bin at work. The Bubinga veneer was purchased at Woodcraft. They sell packets of various veneers and are perfect for small projects like this. Easy to work with and affordable.

I was going for contrast and I achieved that. I chose this particular piece of Maple because the figure is subtle and doesn’t compete with the Bubinga. I think they compliment each other well.

This like most all my boxes are finished in satin lacquer. No stains or dyes. It is lined in ruby red velvet. It is hinged with 90 degree stop hinges.

This is a “just because “ gift for
someone special. Let’s hope she likes it as much as I do.

That is a beautiful box! At first I thought it was cedar chest sized 😀
Beautiful! Love the veneer panels.

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Thank you guys

Yes!
I was thinking along the lines of Steve, a miniature blanket chest.
Great job with the contrasting panels and design features!
Beautifully done!  All the little details add up to a gorgeous outcome.

And, there few occasions nicer than a gift for no reason other than "just because"
Thank you both !

Nice little box! Nice joinery, as well. I have lots of both figured maple and veneer.

I agree the construction is beautiful.  Like a cedar chest build.  Gotta say a lot of work?  Make many because of set ups?

Anyway I like Brusso hinges because the quality is great.  What hinge are you using and do you like the quality?

Petey

I'm a fan of the Brusso's like Petey. I sell stuff and problem is the Brusso's can be 50% of the materials cost. They are the go-to for fine jewelry boxes however.
To reduce that expense and still keep the 95 degree open (slight tilt back so the lid stays open). I'll usually design the overhang on the lid or have fat legs so the lid lip contacts something solid at the proper angle.
It’s beautiful. I know I would like it. At first when you mentioned it was a water fall box I thought of a waterfall fall countertop then I re-read it and I realized it was water fall Bubinga veneer. I never heard of it.

I like how you mortised the hinges making the box mortise deep enough for both leafs. I see that technique in some fine Asian mahogany furniture. Where did you get those 90* stop hinges?

Dr. Quackner

Petey,

I like Brusso too. Here I used stop hinges from Craft Inc. Inexpensive and decent quality for the price

Dr Quackner,

I mortised the box slightly less in depth than the thickness of the barrel and just butted the hinge to the lid. The hinges are from Craft Inc.
