Chamfering Jig

So, it’s was only supposed to be 100° today, which is better than it has been, so I got in a nice walk and then knocked out this little jig this morning before it got hot.

Copied the basic idea from the REED Chamfer Plane Sled, but all made from scraps and bits I had lying about. I had a scrap from a decorative panel that I made for another project years ago…which made for a pretty jig!  Walnut and maple. I spit it down the middle with a 45° angle cut on the table saw, then sized it up. Two quick wooden brackets hold it together.

I screwed the brackets securely to one side of the jig, and sank threaded inserts into the other side. A couple thumb screws and some inset magnets complete the jig.

I sized it a bit large for this little low angle block plane in case I wanted to use a different plane at some point. I found that while chamfering stock, the plane naturally wants to slide back, so I put a small sizing block to the rear to limit how much movement there can be…but it’s removable with one small brass screw to fit other planes.

I also copied some lineup marks on both ends, a la REED, but I just used some spacers to make the gap even, then scribed in a couple marks to make things easy.

It’s comfortable to hold in one hand, and this little low angle plane has the perfect knob for fitting my fat finger to keep everything in place.

The chamfer is self-limiting based on how wide you set the gap in the jig, and the end result is very pleasant!

Finished with Tried & True for easy upkeep.

A nice little jig for sure. I’d highly recommend one for your shop!

Nice little piece of furniture you built for your jig.
😎
That looks mighty handy, and easy on the eyes, too. I need something like this. That size plane is dwarfed in my mitt, so hard to use. A big holder would be better.

Dang that sure is purdy!

Neat idea, I was just pondering how I was going to chamfer the sides on part of my next project. I planned on the router table, simple and clean, but forgot and glued some parts on that'll make that impossible.
A block plane will work, just not comfortable with keeping the angle.

One days work is a great accomplishment, lots of parts to keep track of there!

You know you could have bought a tool that has a similar function from Woodpeckers for only a few hundred right? 🤠

That cooled shop must be keeping the brain oil at perfect viscosity!
That's a nice pretty jig you made there. It didn't take you long to talking about it to finishing it. Nicely done
That's really slick.  I like your idea with the magnets.  And it's gorgeous to boot.

Nice jig, well designed and executed.

100 is too hot. Nicely executed on the jig, I like the markings for sizes on the end

Thanks fellas. The new portable AC unit made it pretty comfortable in there today! And yeah, it’s a great one day project.

I’ve tried chamfering with a block plane by hand many times before and it never quite comes out even…and I usually end up at the router table to clean it up. At least I’ve learned to stop planing early so I don’t get too out of whack to fix! But I’m thinking this jig will help with that. Although I’m not ready to give up the router table just yet!

not only a very useful tool but damn sexy to boot !

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.

Great little jig...  Looks good and I can only assume it works a beaut...

Nice write up as I was initially perplexed on depth control... just hope you don't misplace it amongst all the offcuts that may accumulate on the workbench

If your first cut is too short... Take the second cut from the longer end... LBD

As soon as I saw the wood by Wright video, I knew I would eventually make on for myself.  Adding to my collection of future projects

Great job, RyanGi! Well build and it looks cool.

No name noobie here

Nice jig Ryan, looks handy for an easy adjust of chamfer size.
Really nice!

I have to make one!

Thanks guys. It’s a quick and easy project with great results. 👍🏼

Ryan,
Real party chamfer jig.
I just got a block plane.  Always have laminated scraps.

That's awful pretty for a jig Ryan!
Thanks fellas. Scraps are scraps I guess, no matter if they’re pretty or not! At least I got the chance to use it for something…
