Simple holster for a set of pigment liners

Had a small gap in my day, just enough for a quick shop session. I whipped up a super simple holster for a set of pigment liners I bought.

Nothing more than a cutoff of maple, drilled out on the end grain. Using clamps to keep the stock stable makes vertical drilling much easier! This was tall enough that I used two clamps.

I rounded over the edges on the router table to make it clean, then added a couple magnets to the back. I screwed a piece of scrap steel to the face of a shelf and bob’s your uncle.

In the middle of working on it, UPS showed up with a mystery box for me. Turns out it was my box from the 2023 BeerBQ Swap! Since the reveal hasn’t happened yet, I’m holding off those pics, but suffice it to say it’s awesome goodies in this box!

Back to my mini-project: Looking at it, it was just a bit plain, although totally useable. And I had an hour left before my appointment, so I started out by laser-ing the sizes of each liner into the face of the holster…since, you know, the labels on the lids aren’t obvious enough. Then I added some basic outlining because…well, just because. Then I was looking for some little do-dad or image to put on the front, since it was now so nicely outlined. For some reason, the liner sizes reminded me of coordinates at about the same time I was looking at an artistic compass rose image online. The rest, as they say, is history.

I went to my go-to shop-do-dad finish of Danish Oil.

Now I’ve got a handy place to keep these nice liners instead of just chucked into my pile of shop pencils and pens…and markers…needle files…a set of hemostats…whatever.  Easy to grab, easy to store.

Great holder Ryan!  Now WTF is a pigment liner???
yeah !!! !

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.

TL/DR: felt pens…

A pigment liner is a more precisely sized artistic hard felt tip pen…or in this case ‘pens’. I’m lead to understand artists use them to line their artwork. Different diameters for depth and other artsy stuff. I’ve found they’re awesome for creating sharp, contrasting lines on drawings that I convert to .svg files for use with the Shaper Origin or the laser via LightBurn.

I’m a little rough on them, and am certainly no ar-teest, so I bought a set of different thicknesses. It was cheaper to get 6 of varying diameters than it was to buy three of the one I usually use. With the upcoming delivery of the new Shaper Trace plate and software (a faster and cleaner way to take hand drawn ‘anything’ and convert it to .svg), the different diameters might come in handy.

Nice, Ryan!

May you have the day you deserve!

Very nicely done Ryan!  I just hope you don't have to use those hemastats at home!!!!

I have a couple hemostats in the shop.  For those times when tweezers just don't have the beef 😉

Thanks for the info Ryan.  Fortunately that doesn't sound like anything I need 😁
I’ve got a whole collection of different sized and shaped hemostats. They work awesome for smaller things and they lock closed on thin stuff.

The "cool" kids had those hemostats for passing around. err, never mind 😎

Nice holder and of course the embellishment is something I suspect will become the norm 🤠

Interesting pen set. I use my old drafting Rapidograph pens for the super sharp lines, but they suck since the (india) ink will mess them up quick if left alone for too long. I like stuff that can survive my neglect and scorn, I'll certainly check in on a set!
FWIW, this is the set I bought based on recommendations. Can’t comment on them too much other than to say they draw nicely 😊

Dang, I learned something today, without even trying.
I too have several hemostats around, but only one dental pick.

For that price I wouldn't even need to put the caps back on! 🤠

These are what I have, about 40 years ago. The price has gone up a tad 😱

The wife is also looking for some "nice" fine line pens, I think I'll stash away a few packs so I can offer one up when she starts making noise 🤔

Good idea splint!

Nice holder, not sure if i need those pens or not.

Nice set up Ryan, It looks like it was purchased that way.
I have several sets of old rapidographs that I used for work, but they have been boxed for the last 21 years since I retired. I know the ink is dry, so why did I even keep them? My wife calls me a squirrel because I save everything.

The Rapidographs are refillable aren't they Awsum?  That's why you kept them!
Great idea Ryan....very nicely made and a very practical project.  They are at your fingertips at all times.
Regards......Cliff.
Cool box. I'm impressed with the designs you are lasering?? onto all of your work. Makes a huge impact.
