I made this for my younger daughter to enjoy with her kids. It's made from Eastern Red Cedar, and it's a traditional nest box design with a small opening and nest cavity that's intended for small birds, like Bluebirds. A piece of sheet metal serves as a predator guard. The birdhouse allows the top to lift up in order to service the webcam, and the front face also opens for cleaning out the nest at the end of the season. A wire mesh forms a floor for the birds to build their nests on. There's space below the mesh, and I also put in a few drainage/vent holes at the base/floor of the unit. The groves on the inside face provide a "bird ladder." I did not finish this wood, and so if you saw it today, you'd see that it has weathered to a dull gray.
The webcam (part of which you can see on another birdhouse I made posted on a separate project) is from Green Backyard. You can get more details on this webcam through my other post. I've included a snapshot from this cam that I took today (obtained through my iPhone app) at O' Dark 30, so you can see that the cam has a decent nighttime capability. It shows a bird (looks like a woodpecker) that's been roosting there for the past several months. It'll be out foraging during the daylight hours. At some point soon, I'll go into the nest during the daytime and put some sawdust on the wire mesh base.
